Rosston Council Meets; Discusses New Fire Station BuildingBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 8, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Even though a quorum wasn't present for the Rosston City Council's regular monthly meeting Thursday, Nov. 2, those on hand discussed the new fire station building. The council approved a contractor for the building in a special session Monday, Oct. 16, accepting a bid from HCC, Inc. of Waldo for $33,800. In all three bids were submitted, with HCC's being the lowest, but not by much. HCC will erect a metal building 36-feet by 66-feet by 14-feet using 26 gage white steel panels and a 2-12 pitch roof. The building will also have two full metal doors, 30X10, and another to be half glass. One door will be of the roll up variety, while the other will be a sectional track door. In addition, HCC will pour a six-inch slab, which will be sloped for drainage with the city furnishing the drains and pipes. Plumbing will be roughed in for the commode, sink drain and water. The city will be responsible for getting the dirt work done before the slab is poured. Work on the project is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 20, with the slab being poured. Work crews will return Monday, Nov. 27 to begin putting the building up. According to Rosston Mayor Lewis Jackson, it will take about 10 days to get the metal structure up once the erection process begins. The bid package required all bidders to provide proof they were qualified to do a job of this size. The council had approved a company earlier to build the new fire station, only to learn the contractor wasn't licensed for jobs of that size. The end result was the city had to rebid the project and require proof of licensing for a job of this scope, along with a bid bond. Imperial Building Contractor of Waldo turned in a bid of $33,810, with Patton Construction, Inc., of Texarkana, Ark. submitting a bid of $44,455.14. A fourth bid was received, though well after the bid deadline, according to Jackson. This bid wasn't considered, but Jackson said it was in excess of $40,000. When the new fire station has been built it will have a white roof with gallery blue gutters and stone colored walls. There will be no center walls, Jackson said, to divide the building and the city will have to finish the plumbing. Depending on the weather, he said, the new building should be up by Dec. 10. Because a quorum wasn't present and the regular meeting couldn't be held, the meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
