Clark County Judge Floyd 'Buddy' Manning, Arkadelphia mayor C.T. Hollingshead and Gurdon mayor Rick W. Smith are among 103 officials in 62 Arkansas counties to declare May 9- 15 as Historic Preservation Week, State Historic Officer Cathy Slater of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program announced May 5.

"The theme of Preservation Week 1999 is 'Protecting the Irreplaceable' and we are asking all Arkansans to note the role their local historic properties, especially those listed on the National Register of Historic Places, play in community life," Slater said.

In Gurdon, the places listed on the National Register are the Gurdon jail, which is a 1907 lumber town jail located at the corner of W. Joslyn and Front Streets; the old Missouri-Pacific Railroad depot, a 1917 Mediterranean-style structure located at North First and East Walnut Streets; the June Sandidge House, a 1935 English Revival-style structure located at 811 Cherry Street; and Horace Estes house, a 1934 Tudor Revival-style residence located at 614 E. Main Street.

The proclamations from Manning, Hollingshead and Smith note that historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and that historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural, and for Americans of all ages, all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds.

They also say that it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people. Noting that "Protecting the Irreplaceable" is the theme for National Preservation Week 1999 cosponsored by Clark County, Arkadelphia, Gurdon, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, the Department of Arkansas Heritage and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, they proclaim May 9-15, as Preservation Week, and call upon the people of Clark County to join their fellow citizens across the United States in recognizing and participating in the special observance.

The AHPP is the agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage responsible for the identification, evaluation, registration and preservation of the state's cultural resources.

Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Arkansas Territorial Restoration.
