Chamber, Sonic Set Thanksgiving Food DriveBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 1, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune A Thanksgiving Food Drive is being sponsored by the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce and Sonic Drive-In. According to Mary Godwin, Chamber director, the drive will cover the entire county, with the idea being to help provide a good Thanksgiving meal for those in need on this holiday. One of the reasons Thanksgiving was selected, she said, is because there are other similar drives and programs done for Christmas, but there are still those in need for the November holiday. Those who help out by making donations will be rewarded for their efforts. Not only will they know they helped a fellow human being, but they will be given a coupon from Sonic for a free medium soft drink. Donations of canned or non-perishable goods can be made at the Sonic by driving up and telling them over the microphone, letting manager Jerry Bozich know about it. Or, take the donation by the Chamber, where a box will be set up for them. The drive will be held from Nov. 6-17. Names for families in need will be obtained from local agencies, Godwin said. The food baskets will be delivered across the county wherever they're needed. The Chamber's beautification committee is hosting a name the park contest for the new pocket park in the Sterlings lot where the mural is. Godwin said the winner will receive a $25 cash prize and have their photo taken for the time capsule, which will be buried in the park at a future date. The name, she said, should have some significance for the park or area. These suggestions can either be mailed to the Chamber, dropped off or called in. The committee reserves the right to refuse any and all entries at its discretion. And, as the modern weapon deer season approaches, so does the Chamber's Fall Fashion Show. This year's theme is a "Harvest of Fall Fashion," with the fashion show scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11, opening day for the modern weapon deer season. The show will be held at the Potlatch Building on the Nevada County Fairgrounds and run from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Lenora Dalrymple is chairman of the menu and has selected a luncheon of ham and cheese quiche, fruit salad with poppyseed dressing and a pumpkin roll for dessert. Coffee and tea will also be available. The fashion show, Godwin said, is held by the retail merchant's committee to showcase local goods and services. Local businesses, she said, have more to offer than many people realize. The fashion show will have segments on nail care and scarf tying techniques. Tickets for the show are $8 each and may be purchased at the Chamber, the Bank of Prescott or Prescott Flowers. Godwin urges all who plan to attend to buy their tickets in advance.
