CMS Receives GrantPublished Wednesday, November 1, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe Cabe Foundation has awarded Cabe Middle School a grant for $1,036.20. The grant made it possible to purchase tape recorders, head phones and audio books along with the written text book. This grant compliments the computerized accelerated reading program that the school is using. Research indicates that listening to audio books while following along with the book is an effective means of increasing reading comprehension. The audio books are housed in Jean Smithey's classroom, but are available to students in other classes. Mrs. Smithey has received an EDCORE grant in the amount of $1,000. The grant entitled D.A.T.A. (Doing Activities to Achieve) sessions and it provides money to create a packet of lessons that requires students to use higher order thinking while reading various types of literature such as recipes, craft projects and travel brochures). First hand experiences, as well as the think-aloud method of teaching are used as a means of enhancing students' reading success on Arkansas mandated tests. Mrs. Smithey, along with Dr. Smithey of Henderson State University, will present D.A.T.A. sessions at four conferences and workshops as part of the grant.
