Red Springs EHCPublished Wednesday, November 1, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesFashion development was the program given to the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club by Betty Cook Oct. 12. Cook is a cultural arts, clothing and textiles leader. France was the center of fashion and dictated by royalty being the best dressed and catered to the hand sewing by dressmakers and tailors. At the beginning of the 1800's came the invention of the sewing machine that provided jobs and gave women more money. As a result of changing technology and the industrial revolution a growing middle class and a demand for affordable fashion. Fashion became available to everyone instead of just the wealthy few. The industry now tries to cater to the needs of the consumer in all areas of the fashion market. Nineteen members and one visitor answered roll call by describing their most favorite outfit. Tootsie Dempsey gave the devotional, You are Loved.' Canned foods were collected for the Thanksgiving basket and craft items for a basket to take donations for a fund-raiser. Lorece Freeman was selected to be the club's homemaker of the year. She volunteers her time where needed and is active in the club and county activities. The Christmas tour of homes is planned for Dec. 3. Tickets are $5. The Red Springs Club lost two wonderful members this year, Mattie Talley and Maggie Sue Currey. Mattie moved here from El Dorado and was a five-year member. Maggie Sue was a 50 plus member. The door prize was won by Dorothy Nilz. Hostesses were Paulin Cook and Elizabeth Wilson.
