Classy Moments from CMS

Published Wednesday, November 1, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

Red Ribbon Week came to a close with a big success. The students had different activities each day to say "No to drugs". Each morning four members' names were drawn from the hat and the wait was on to have the student with his red ribbon and matching number to go to the office to claim his prize.

Tuesday, we gave drugs a slip,' as house slippers of all kinds, shapes and colors were worn. Several students asked if they could do that again, as it made them feel more comfortable.

Wednesday was hobo day. Such a variety of dress. Some of the cutest hobos you could imagine. It is times like these that it would be so nice if all of you could have been here and seen the mixed match of colors, dirty faces, torn clothes, tops off hats, just so many different looks that brought such fun for all of us.

Thursday we broke the chain that had been made with red paper links. Names of students were on each link and several prizes were given away.

After the chain was broken the students took their socks off as the Gurdon High School band provided music for a sock hop,' so we were socking it to drugs. The students had a great time as they took the floor in their sock feet and preceded to enjoy the music. The band was great. A big thanks to Mr. Wimberly and Mr. Burson for providing such great entertainment.

Friday was hug a bear, not drugs,' and several students brought their favorite stuffed toy to hug. This writer had no idea that such a variety of stuffed toys existed. Some of the cutest and softest stuffed toys received a lot of hugs.

Several teachers received prizes for wearing their red ribbons if their names were drawn. Mrs. McBride won a vanilla scented candle, Mrs. Anderson has a barbecue sandwich from Allen's Barbeque waiting for her. Tonya Martin will enjoy a treat from Sonic, and Mrs. Briscoe will enjoy a pizza from Pizza Pro. Mrs. Jester really enjoyed the 14-inch pizza from Pizza Shack. Mrs. Jean Smithey won the big prize of a beautiful silk tree made by M&M of Gurdon.

Red Ribbon Week came to a close, but the importance of saying no to drugs will always be the way to go.

It might be very interesting to ask Ms. Dickens where she hides small paper items of great importance. Now, for the rest of the story, but she will have to tell you.

Mock election will be fully under way when you are reading this. The candidates are preparing for the political convention to be held Monday, Nov. 6, at 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. Voting will take place following the convention and counting the votes as soon as possible.

Many more things to do as we continue to make those Classy Moments.
