Olive Pauline LowePublished Wednesday, May 12, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesOlive Pauline Lowe, 85, of Gurdon passed away Wednesday, May 5, 1999. Mrs. Lowe was born in Joplin, Mo., to the late W. O. Carter and Ida Belle Smoot Carter. She married the late Marcus L. Lowe of Gurdon on October 23, 1936. She resided in Gurdon the rest of her life. Mrs. Lowe was an active member and officer of the First Presbyterian Church in Gurdon, where she taught Sunday school and P.Y.F. She was recently recognized for her many years of service in her church. Mrs. Lowe was a past member and officer of the Order of the Eastern Star and other community organizations. She was especially proud of the accomplishments of the Community Development Club, where she served as a member and officer. She was organizer and mistress of ceremonies of the annual Miss Gurdon Pageant for over ten years. In 1959 while on vacation in California, she entered and won the Queen for a Day Contest, based on her request for medical supplies and help for a local boy who was paralyzed. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bill Thomason of Sherwood; her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Kaye Lowe of North Little Rock; a sister, Mary McAfee of Pine Bluff; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and other relatives. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Gurdon. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, at First Presbyterian Church in Gurdon with interment in Rose Hedge Cemetery under the direction of Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon.
