Picayune Moving Offices To 100 East Elm Next Week

Published Wednesday, October 18, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Nevada County Picayune will be moving next week to its new location at 100 East Elm in the old Dale Ledbetter's Department Store building. Prior to Ledbetter having a business at that location, Joe Boswell's Clothier occupied the building.

The move will begin taking place this week and should be completed by the end of next week.

It is hoped the business doors will be open at that location on Tuesday of next week, but if not they will be open on Wednesday.

The move was necessary due to the sale of its present location by John and Betty Ragsdale to the city of Prescott. A new million dollar library will be constructed next year in the 100 block of West Main. The library will take up half a block on the south side of the street.

The city and county received a million dollar grant to construct the library, but the building had to built downtown. The site committee selected the location since it joins a proposed mini park that also has includes part of the new mural at Main and West First.

Parking is planned at the former Chuck's Plumbing site across the street from the planned library.

Three other businesses besides the Picayune were displaced. They are Movies at Home, Donald Jester's Auction House and Paul and Pat Fredrick's Enterprises. Paul does furniture repairs and makes new furniture and cabinets. Pat sells antiques. Bennie Moseley does upholstery work at that location as well.

An open house and ribbon-cutting will be held later at the Picayune, which also plans to participate in Christmas on the Square this year.

Mayor Howard Taylor has indicated that the new location may be the first revamping of the sidewalks with trees planted in the area and new Victorian-style lamp posts. However, he said it would be after the first of the year before the work could be done.
