Bluff City News

This has been another slow week for news. The main topics of conversation are football, hunting and politics. The men talk about these things and the women probably talk about the men.

It is time to begin to get serious about the upcoming election. It's not far off. We need to check out what each candidate stands for. The right to vote is taken for granted by so many Americans. It seems to me that the people who complain about

things the most are the ones who do not vote.

Funeral services for Willa Lewis were held Oct. 17 at Camden with burial in Bluff City Cemetery.

Happy birthday wishes to Mr. Olen Kelley, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday on Oct. 20.

Jeanie and I were in Shreveport for three days last week while I was

attending a work-related meeting. They put us up in a very nice hotel. My only concern was that our room

was on the seventh floor. My thoughts went back to my stay on the fifth floor of a hotel in downtown Little Rock years ago when the fire alarm went off in the

middle of the night. I will never forget the sight of about 20 sleepy, half dressed people trying to get out

of that hotel. We went down five flights of stairs in about thirty seconds. It turned out to be a false alarm, but it sure ruined a good night's sleep. Since then, I have tried to avoid staying in high rise hotels and think more about fire safety. I'm like the old farmer who said he didn't want to be any higher than picking corn or any lower than

digging taters.

Do you remember when most of the stores in Nevada County closed on Wednesdays afternoons? That all started about 1947. A store being open on Sunday was almost unheard of. Funny how things change over the years.

A thought: Children are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded.
