Springs EHCPublished Wednesday, May 19, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesThe Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club program for May 13 was 'Coping with Loneliness,' given by Elizabeth Wilson. It is important to remember everyone is lonely at some time in life. Elderly people are lonely. They have strong desires to be touched, be heard and to feel important. A caregiver of a relative is often overlooked. Be quick to congratulate them on a job well done. Many times the person who receives help cannot or will not acknowledge the importance the caregiver plays in their life. Parents who stay at home with their children get lonely for adult company. Rearing children is one of the most rewarding, yet demanding, jobs in the world. Children are not immune to loneliness. Take time to listen to their ideas, as holding and listening are strong tools to use for building a positive self identity. Loneliness in a marriage can creep in when communication breaks down. Give a spouse room to change some habits without criticizing or poking fun at them. Volunteering is a good way to help others while helping to keep your mental attitude healthy. Exercise, visit a library, visit or call a friend, or join an Extension homemakers club. These are some helpful hints to help others and yourself also. Eighteen members and four visiting members of the Whelen Springs Extension Homemakers Club answered roll call by answering, "Have you called a friend today?" President Jean Toland presided over the business session. Whelen and Red Springs Clubs finalized the food menu and other plans for the county fair kitchen. Officers elected for the next two years were Tootsie Dempsey, president; Kathryn Burchfield, vice president; Larice Friemon, secretary/treasurer; Mary McBride, public relations; and Kathy Bauer, scrapbook chairman. A workshop on constructing 30 teaching dolls for the Arkansas Children's Hospital will be announced at a later date. The Apples for Teachers project will be finalized this coming week. Cards of appreciation were read from Courage House for the Bibles presented to them and the Diamond Chapter of the American Red Cross for the $50 donation to the Kosovo refugees. Hostesses of the meeting were Kathy and Lavene Bauer. Sybil Harris won the door prize and Helen Toland gave the blessing of the food. The next meeting will be June 10 at the Gurdon Municipal Building. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
