Voters Will Find Five Contested Races On Nov. 7BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 18, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune When voters to go the polls to cast their ballots in the Nov. 7 General Election, there will be only five contested races. These races are for the U.S. President, 4th Congressional House of Representatives, Arkansas Supreme Court Justice, the Arkansas State House of Representatives and Nevada County Sheriff. According to Davis Benton, chairman of the Nevada County Election Commission, early voting will begin Monday, Oct. 23, while absentee voting is currently underway. The polling places for the General Election will be the same they were in the primary, Benton said, and the election will run from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Along with the five contested races, voters will be making decisions on five proposed amendments and one initiated act. Once again, the commission will be using an electronic tabulating machine to count the votes as they come on. "I expect a big turnout," Benton said. There are more than 6,000 registered voters in Nevada County, with Benton expecting between 3,500 to 4,000 to go to the polls. On the local level there are no contested races and all candidates seeking office will be lumped into one block. There are no local issues either, he said, as no municipalities are seeking any kind of tax hikes. In the run for the White House, the ballot positions are as follows: Gov. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for the Republican Party; Harry Brown and Art Olivier for the Libertarian Party; Al Gore and Joe Lieberman for the Democratic Party; Howard Phillips and J. Curtis Frazier for the Constitution Party; Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke for the Green Party; Pat Buchanan and Ezola Foster for the Reform Party; and Dr. John Hagelin and Nate Goldhaber for the Natural Party. Ballot positions for the 4th Congressional District race show Jay Dickey, R, in the first position followed by Mike Ross . In the race for Arkansas Supreme Court, the ballot has Max Koonce first and Jim Hannah second. Steve Otwell got the first position for the Nevada County Sheriff's race, with Gary Hicks second. For District 36 of the Arkansas House of Representatives the ballot will show Tommy Roebuck in the top spot, with Ron Addington in the second position.
