Classy Moments from CMS

Published Wednesday, October 18, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

Some of the nicest remarks have been made about our article and I would like to say a big thank you. It means so much to hear from our readers, especially those who enjoy the article.

The pep rally was more cheerleading than student cheering this week. Maybe the students were just a little tired, as they usually do a lot of yelling, I mean cheering.

Mrs. Bullard named the cheerleaders of the week as Jill Plyler and Haleigh McDaniel. Good job, girls. Speaking of Mrs. Bullard, sponsor of the junior high cheerleaders, she has been moving around just a little bit slower than usual. She is trying to get back on the right track, but when one has problems with the back, it can be very painful and also a long time healing. We are just glad she is able to be at work and we are trying to help take care of her.

Well, it seems as though the new girls' basketball coach is settling in like she has always belonged to us. Some of the students have trouble with her name, Kirkpatrick, and call her Cleopat or names similar. She enjoys talking. Just don't ask her any of Brandie's secrets.

Science students from fifth, sixth and seventh grades participated in a competition sponsored by the Sonic of Gurdon. Mary Smith, manager, challenged each class to construct a space suit. Suits would be judged on creativity and authenticity. Each class constructed a suit and selected a student astronaut for the competition.

The event was held Oct. 7. An atmosphere of fun was provided by the Radio Disney and Cool Mix 106.9 radio personalities. Mrs. Smith awarded generous cash prizes to the class winners. The money will be used to buy new science equipment for CMS. Mrs. Smith presented a framed print signed by astronauts from a NASA skylab mission, of which will be on display in the media center. A big thanks to Mrs. Smith for sponsoring such an educational activity and making it so rewarding. Also, a big thank you for those science teachers, Mrs. Butler, Mrs. Whitlock and Mr. Bearden.

A mock election is under way. George Bush, (Taylor Morehead) and his wife, (Taylor Pace), Cheney (Derek Buck) and wife (Katie Barbaree) and Al Gore (Kyle Berline) and wife (Callie King), and Liberman (Sean O'Connell) and wife (Natalie Tarpley) are busy getting speeches ready for the political convention to be held November 6.

The campaign committees' are certainly working hard for their party candidates. Chair of the committees are Amy Stiffler and Haley Griffin.

Remember parent-teacher conferences to be held Thursday, Oct. 19, from 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. If any student needs a hepatitis, measles, mumps, rubella, DTP, or polio vaccine, the Clark County Health Department will be administering these during the conference. Each child will need to be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or legal guardian. A copy of the child's shot record and $3 will be needed.

So much to do, and time is flying by. We have completed the first nine-week period of this school year. Can you believe it? Guess one just doesn't notice the time when you are making those classy moments at CMS.
