Childres Withdraws From Race; Brother On Ballot

Gurdon City Marshal David Childres has officially withdrawn from the marshal's race for the Nov. 7 General Election.

Childres submitted a letter to the Clark County Election Commission dated Monday, Oct. 9, but said the letter was actually delivered Tuesday, Oct. 10.

In the letter, Childres cites health reasons for withdrawing from the race.

"Might as well get it over with," he said.

At the Gurdon City Council meeting Monday, Oct. 9, Childres said he would make a decision by Friday, Oct. 13, after he'd seen his doctor.

However, Monday, Oct. 16, Childres said he was able to get his doctor's appointment changed to Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Childres said waiting until Friday would have strung things out and there was no point in it.

Todd Turner, chairman of the Clark County Democratic Party, said he received the letter Oct. 10 in an envelope.

Childres' withdrawal, he said, causes problems for the party as it would love to have a Democrat candidate in the election.

Turner said the party could have a caucus to name a candidate if anyone were interested and paid the filing fee, but isn't obligated to do this.

"This isn't the Democratic party's fault," Turner said. "We didn't have time to do anything."

At this time, the only candidate in the race for Gurdon City Marshal is Don Childres, who filed in early September as an Independent.

David Childres said he will be applying for disability because of his health problems, but doesn't know what else he may do.

"All I know is I'm getting out of police work as city marshal," he said.
