Here's a news flash, September was hot, but not dry.

According to John Teeter, local weatherman, 4.14 inches of rain fell in Prescott during September, with the normal rainfall amount being 3.47 inches. This gave the area a surplus of 0.67 inches for the month.

For the year, he said, the area has received 37.40 inches, with this being slightly above the norm of 37.08 inches. It gives the locality 0.32 inches more than usual.

"We have finally reached the plus side of annual rainfall after months of minus readings," Teeter said.

Davis Benton, Cale meteorologist, said the south part of Nevada County got 3.42 inches of rain in September, with most of this coming late in the month.

In fact, he said, it rained more in the entire month of September than it did all summer, from June 21 to Sept. 21. During this stretch, the Cale area received 3.40 inches of rain.

For the year, Benton said, the south part of the county has received 39.98 inches of rain, or 0.02 inches above normal.

According to Teeter, September was a hot month, starting with Sept. 1 when the mercury climbed to a blistering 110 degrees. This, he said, is a new record.

The old record was 98 degrees and was recorded in 1925.

In fact, he said, the first five days of September saw the temperature hit 110, 107, 106, 107 and 108. "This is probably a record hot spell, but we haven't had time to check it."

Even though there was above normal rainfall in September, he said, it only rained three days during the month. On Sept. 25, though, 2.69 inches fell for the largest single-day total.

There was thunder the afternoon of Sept. 24, but no weather watches or warnings were issued during the month. Normally, he said, there are three.

The average daily temperature for Sept. was 70 degrees, but this year, the average temperature was 76.

Teeter said near the record low temperature of 44 degrees from Sept. 26-28 brought the average down somewhat,

October, he said, usually sees 3.27 inches of rain, with the average daily temperature being 65 degrees.
