GPS Students Learn Basic Aid SkillsPublished Wednesday, October 11, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesTaught by instructors of the Diamond Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, BAT (Basic Aid Training) is designed to help fourth grade students learn the basic skills and common injuries and to respond in emergency situations. The program emphasizes prevention to highlight its importance reducing injuries. Its aim is to teach young people how to think preventively, how to stop an emergency from occurring and how to respond effectively if it does. Part of the course involves the use of lifelike adult and infant manikins by the students. They learn the skills to give rescue breathing for both an infant and an adult and the skills to give first aid for a choking infant or adult. At the end of the day long course, each student receives an American Red Cross Basic Aid Training workbook to reinforce the day's lessons and hands on experiences.
