Classy Moments from CMSPublished Wednesday, October 4, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesWe have really been enjoying the cooler weather at CMS. The students have certainly enjoyed being outside after lunch. Needless to say, they did not try to gather under the awning over the sidewalk to keep the hot sun off them. The junior high football team really played an outstanding game against Lewisville Thursday. The score was 30 to 0. Marcel Johnson made two touchdowns. Hunter Johnson found being in the end zone was a lot of fun. And then there was Franklin Smith. It seemed as though Franklin leaped high, high, high to intercept the ball and later took it into the end zone. All three of those players do realize that they could never have accomplished the touchdowns without the help of the entire team. Great game, fellows! Several fans went out during half time to get their jackets from their cars. It was great football weather. My, what a difference a drop in temperature makes. Our seventh graders played Bismarck Thursday and were defeated by a score of 8 to 0. Now, don't let that score make you think that we do not have a good seventh grade team, because we do. We have players who give it 110 percent in practice as well as during the game. Several players were asked to name the most outstanding player during the game. It seemed without hesitation they each would give the same name: Sam Hughes. Sam gave it his best. Most interestingly was one student who said it was the entire team that was the most outstanding. It really makes one feel good to know that the team members complement another player. Great team effort! The CMS Student Council assembly was most entertaining. Several seventh and eighth grade students from the Arkadelphia Academy of Dance performed tap dances, ballet and jazz numbers. The ballet trio won the talent at the recent Clark County Fair pageant and will be representing Clark County on the state level. Christa Hopson and Jordan Purifoy conducted the assembly just as though they had been speaking to a large audience and into a microphone for a long time. Nervous? No way!! Citizen students for the month of September were fifth grader, Rae'Shawn Stephens, sixth grader, Ashley Berry, seventh grader, Sarah Armstrong, and eighth grader, Calvin Nolan. Tuesday school was dismissed at 1:00 p.m. for teacher in-service. CMS faculty met with Tonya McMillin for about one and one-half hours learning more about improving math scores and a little more detailed information concerning the five year improvement plan. It seems as though there is not enough time in the day to get everything completed. Maybe that is one reason we stay so busy making those Classy Moments at CMS.
