Bluff City NewsJERRY McKELVYPublished Wednesday, September 27, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune It is Sunday afternoon as I pen these words, and I am enjoying the first rainy day we have had in many weeks. A fellow named John Burroughs once said, "Rain is as necessary to the mind as to vegetation. My very thoughts become thirsty, and crave the moisture." Maybe it's because of the recent dry weather that I have not thought of anything to write about this week. Something probably happened that would be of interest to someone, but I can't read minds. If you want it reported, you must let me know. Since I have no news of the present, I must go back a few years to find some. In May of 1939 I find Mrs. C.C. Harvey of Bluff City is reporting on the good response to a request for family treasures to be used in the Better Homes tour on May 3. She reported that over 50 items were brought. Some of the more interesting ones were: a leather-backed Bible dated 1879, which belongs to Mrs. Joe Meador, a conch shell, which had for many years served as a horn from Mrs. Andy Meador, a 60-year-old heavy black satin bonnet and some tin types from Mrs. Tom Walker, a family album and ruffled corset cover from Mrs. Marion Kirk, a Bible dated 1847 from Mrs. Will Norman, a double-barrel shotgun over 100 years old from Neal Harvey, a hand-woven cover lid woven by Con Harvey's grandparents, and a bedspread made by Herbert Knight out of 50 spools of thread with 800 yards on each spool made like the lamp mats our grandmothers made. Wouldn't you like to see these items today? What family treasures do you have lying around the house? In case of fire what one item would you grab on the way out?Just something to think about.
