Science Camp Available For McRae Sixth Grade StudentsPublished Wednesday, September 27, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott's school district has selected for a prestigious honor. It is one of two schools in Southwest Arkansas to be picked to participate in a pilot program for sixth grade science camps. These camps will be located at a camp on DeGray lake and are currently being developed b y a coalition of several governmental agencies. These agencies include: the Arkansas Department of Environmental Conservation; Arkansas Game and Fish Commission; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and the Arkansas Forestry Association. All students in the sixth grade at McRae Middle School are invited to attend this educational camps taking place from Oct. 9-12, and again from Oct. 23-26. These camps will focus on applying the educational principals received in the classroom and translating them into hands-on scientific experiences. The camp property being used is the Camp of the Pines, owned by the Presbytery of the Pines and is a Presbyterian Church property developed in the 1970's for small group camping. This project is being developed as a long-term commitment to augmenting the educational opportunities of public schools. Eventually, the idea is to extend such programs to all school districts in Southwest Arkansas. For those attending, the camp is a four-day, three-night educational event. Some of the state's top educators will be coming in to provide instruction with teachers and other adults helping out to facilitate the experience for the students. Those interested in signing up should contact McRae Middle School Principal Jim Gober at 887-2521. This camp is only for those students in the sixth grade, and will be free to those who attend.
