This scholarship, created by Sam Walton the founder of Wal-Mart, is granted to an outstanding freshman majoring in science or business technology in recognition of exceptional academic achievement in high school as well as leadership and service contributions. This scholarship provides $5,000 a year over and above any other scholarships and awards and is funded from the sale of Sam's American Choice food items along with Wal-Mart vendor donations. The three received the award at the annual UCA Honors College orientation banquet held on Aug. 22. She was also the recipient of a UCA Trustee Scholarship and an Academic Challenge Scholarship. UCA's Honors College is one of only a few specially designed honors colleges in the country. Former Secretary of Education Dr. Terrel Bell called it "an Ivy League education at a bargain basement price." Enrollment in the Honors College is by invitation only. It offers travel and research opportunities, small classes, and honors residential housing with private rooms to students who qualify. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
