I have heard no complaints about the temperatures the last few days.

I received a nice letter the other day from Mrs. Mavis Belisle of Austin, Texas. She is the daughter of Will and Gillie Hall Griffith and grew up in the old Gooseankle community and later moved to Caney (Morris). She and her sister, Mildred Griffith Munn, of Nashville read the Picayune. Some of the old historical items in this column brought back memories of her days growing up in this area and her early schooldays at the old Gum Grove school.

I think you would be surprised at the number of folks who read the Picayune who live in far away places. I have heard from some who read the Internet edition each week. It is nice that people can use this means to keep up with news of interest to them.

Several in the community gathered to wish Shaun Meador well as he leaves for training for the U. S. Coast Guard. He will be going to New Jersey.

Since this is the time of year for fairs, I thought I would mention the

Nevada County Fair of 1938. There were 72 entries for clothing, 201 for home cooking and 168 for food preservation. The article said a crowd of 8,000 to 12,000 people from all parts of the county attended. Louise Fuller of Bodcaw was the Fair Queen that year. Pauline Cummings represented Bluff City.

Steve Beaver and some friends went squirrel hunting near Ola. He reports that it is very dry there and all the trees on the ridges have turned brown.
