College NewsPublished Wednesday, May 19, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneJarrod Miller and Lindsey Powell, both seniors at Prescott High School, recently received a Leadership Award to Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. To be nominated for a Leadership Award, students must exhibit exemplary leadership skills, have a 3.0 or better grade point average and score above 21 on the ACT. In high school Miller serves as president of the National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America. He is a member of the Key Club, Future Farmers of America and Art Club. He served as a page for State Sen. Mike Ross, is an Eagle Scout and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. Powell serves as president of the Future Farmers of America and secretary of the senior class and Student Council. She is a member of the yearbook staff, was chosen Outstanding Senior by the faculty and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. Miller plans to major in business. He is the son of Joe and Brenda Miller of Prescott. Powell plans to major in animal science. She is the daughter of James Ray and Joyce Kay Powell of Prescott. Kelly Smith of Prescott was one of 169 students who was awarded undergraduate and graduate degrees in a commencement ceremony at Freed-Hardeman University Saturday, May 8. Smith, daughter of Robert and Bonnie Smith, was awarded a bachelor of business administration with a concentration in management accounting, graduating magna cum laude. Freed-Hardeman University is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and School's to award bachelor's and master's degrees. James Robert McGough, a senior at Prescott High School, has been awarded a technical scholarship at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. The scholarship is based on an ACT score and grade point average plus a recommendation from a school official. McGough is the son of Robert and Carolyn McGough of Prescott. He will be pursuing Cisco computer networking certification. Phyllis Jackson of Malvern received her master's degree in education Saturday, May 15, from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The ceremonies were held in Barton Coliseum. The daughter of John and Betty Ragsdale of Prescott, she is married to John Jackson and they have two daughters. She teaches at Magnet Cove School near Malvern. Caroline Belle Marshall, 26, will be awarded an M.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, in commencement ceremonies Tuesday, May 25. She has been accepted into the internal medicine residency program at Baylor College of Medicine. Marshall, a 1991 graduate of Prescott High School, earned a bachelors degree in biology in 1995 at Duke University. She is the daugher of Carol Marshall of Prescott.
