CANDACE CARRIE - EXTENSION AGENT, FAMILY SCIENCES
Published Wednesday, September 13, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

I hope each of you have picked up your copy of this year's Nevada County Fair catalog by now and have spent a little time reviewing the schedule and entry categories. (If you do not have a catalog, you can pick up a copy at either of the local banks, the Chamber of Commerce or at the Extension office.)

There are lots of opportunities to participate in at your county fair. The fun is just waiting for you! Read the regulations for general information and then the specific rules of the areas which you are interested in entering. Special notice should be given to the entry times such as Monday, September 18, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 19, from 7:30 until 10:00 a.m.

If you are planning to enter canned goods, please make sure you are using canning jars mayonnaise jars are not acceptable. Also make sure the jars are sealed and the outer ring of the two-piece top can be loosened and is rust free.

There is a special award from Ball and Kerr in several of the food preservation categories. To be eligible the item must be in a Ball jar or a Kerr jar with a lid to match. Check your entries.

Items to be entered in household arts should be clean and pressed, if necessary. Follow the catalog guidelines and remember just one item per lot number.

Do not forget that items from the garden, furniture making examples, caning, crafts, photographs and art work all have a place in the Nevada County Fair.

If each of us brought an exhibit, or volunteered an hour of our time or participated in an activity at the fair, then we would truly have a wonderful county fair. I'll be there and I hope you will too.
