PHS Website Recognized

Published Wednesday, September 13, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott High School website has been named to the best site showcase for the month of August, back to school 2000 and the month of September by My School Online.

The site had been generating nearly 3,000 hits a month since a counter was installed in mid-April with a marked increase since the award was listed on the myschoolonline.com website. In the last three weeks it has had over 5,000 visitors.

The best site showcase is awarded to outstanding school websites nationally and recognizes only a few schools each month. In August PHS and an elementary school in Virginia shared the best back to school 2000. In September an additional elementary school was added for the monthly award, leaving Prescott High School the top high school site in the United States.

In citing criteria for the award myschoolonline.com states, "These websites demonstrated leadership and success by integrating the Internet in the learning process of students and/or parents; mastering online communication between the school and home; and increasing parental involvement in schools and classrooms.

"Through their websites these districts, schools and educators have opened the walls of their schools and classrooms, capturing their community's attention and enthusiasm..."

If you haven't visited the site lately you are in for a surprise. It has grown considerably in the last few months. Most teachers have pages with lots of school and subject information for students, parents and the community.

Parent-teacher conferences, public meetings and school events are announced at the site. There will be announcements when mid-nine weeks grades are issued so that parents can be well informed. A weekly bulletin is also listed with items about which students and parents should stay informed.

Parents and students can actually sit down together and look over course offerings and plan the child's high school career right in their own home. Curriculum offerings, graduation requirements and grading scales are all listed on the site.

Some teachers post homework, study pages and learning activities for the students. There are study links and test taking tips and information. These should prove useful as the yearly testing is in late September. Look for testing dates at the site.

There are club, sports and activity pages, weather and news, a school menu, sports schedules and a counselor's page with testing dates and information, college links and scholarship information. Most pages now have music, photos, colorful backgrounds and graphics.

You can check out the honors and awards pages and see who has excelled in classes at PHS. An online art gallery shows student artwork from the PHS art department. There is even an online card catalog for the PHS media center so books can be easily located.

There are community resource links as well as links to other schools in Arkansas. The site is linked to the Arkansas Department of Education and other state agencies.

Patrons moving to Prescott and visitors to the city will find map pages showing how to get to the Prescott schools and even pages to tell new students how to enroll.

Sandra Anderson Shope is the web site administrator for Prescott School District and has been working with the Prescott High School site since its start in January 2000. Plans are being made for workshops and training sessions with faculty and staff at the other two schools.
