In Our Times . . . News That Matters To GurdonPublished Wednesday, September 13, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesFirst State Bank of Gurdon will be having a pee-wee football team again this year. The team is allowed only 20 players on the team. In an effort to be fair coaches will select out of the 5th and 6th grades first. If any spaces are left open they will then choose out of the fourth grade. A date for signing up will be given to students at school. It will include the fees and other information. For more information contact the coach Bud Hunter at 353-2822. First Baptist Church of Gurdon will celebrate its homecoming Sunday, Sept. 17, at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will follow the morning services. A special church history and song service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is invited. Beirne Rural Fire Department will be having its annual festival October 7. There is booth space available. Call Douglas Brumley at 353-6525 or Charles Shaver at 353-4640 for information. There will be a food booth, entertainment, auction and cake walk. Booth set-up will start at 9:00 a.m. with the festivities starting at 10:00. Candelario and Carrie Leon of Gurdon proudly announce the birth of their son, Migel Angel, Thurs., Sept. 7. Weighing 8 lbs. and 9 oz., Migel is the brother of Marissa and Jaclyn. He is the grandson of Mariadel and Candelario Leon of Mexico and great grandson of Enda and A.J. Wilson of Gurdon. An area tent revival will be held Sept. 17-22 at 7:00 each night at Curtis Junction. Evangelists will be Bill Cato, Bobby Cook, Donny Lewis, Frank Henson, Robert Watson and Charlie Williams. Music minister will be Wade Allison. Everyone is invited to attend. About 25 citizens of Gurdon met at the Municipal Building last Thursday evening for consideration of the occupational and recreational needs of the city's youth. Suggestions and ideas were presented and a committee was formed for the purpose of preliminary study of potential sites for surveying the feelings and wishes of the young people. The group will meet again on October 10 for further planning. The public is urged to attend and offer its input and assistance. First Assembly of God in Gurdon will have a gospel concert with an exciting new group called Spirit Wind,' Friday, Sept. 22, at 7:00 p.m. Spirit Wind's' members write most of their music and have both gospel and contemporary music experience. They are from Malvern. Everyone is invited. Gurdon Head Start is now accepting applications for children of ages 3 and 4 (by September 15) and who are income eligible. The Forthman family reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Gurdon Municipal Building, 103 Maple, beginning at 10:00 a.m. A potluck luncheon will be served. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. Arkie-Stars Square Dance Club will hold an open house on Sept. 19. Free music, finger foods and beginner level square dancing starts at 6:45 p.m at the First United Methodist Church at Ninth and Pine Streets in Arkadelphia. Call 870-246-5681 for more information. The Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club meets every second Thursday of each month at the Gurdon Municipal building beginning at 10:00 a.m. Any interested person is welcome to attend. The city of Gurdon reminds residents the storm sirens are tested every Wednesday at 12:00 noon. Sirens are not tested during inclement weather.
