Youth Day ProclaimedPublished Wednesday, May 19, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe highlight of Boys To Men and Girls To Women (BM-GW) monthly activities took place on Tuesday, May 11, when the group ran the city Prescott and Nevada County governments. The youth day activities started at 8:00 a.m. at the Nevada County Courthouse with Mayor Howard Taylor and County Judge James Roy Brown signing the proclamation as 'Youth Day in Prescott and Nevada County.' After group pictures were taken, each elected official and other city and county personnel took his or her shadowing student(s) to their duty stations, where they began a new experience that will long be remembered. Several of these 'proxy' officials performed some of the same duties as the elected officials. Twenty-two students and 14 county and city officials participated in these activities. The students and the officials they were with were: Rafeal Marlow, a 10th grader with Mayor Taylor; Terrance Stuart, 10th grade and Kerri Bryant, 12th grade, Police Chief Sam Reeder; Franklin Moss, 9th grade, Judge Brown; Keon Sockwell, 9th grade, Sheriff Steve Otwell; Danielle Box, 11th grade, and Daryl Tidwell, 10th grade Circuit Clerk Carolyn Steed; Vontrice Flemons, 11th grade, and Trenace Hardamon, 10th grade, County Clerk Julie Stockton; Brandy Stuckey, 10th grade, and Chad Burton, 9th grade, Tax Assessor Pam Box; Marie Smallwood, 10th grade, and Ora Wiley, 10th grade, Tax Collector; Jeana Haynie, 11th grade, and Taquila Williamson, 9th grade, Treasurer Karen Cobb; Tiffany Young, 10th grade, Health Department Director Janet McAdams; Shakara Sims, 11th grade, and Crystal Moss, 11th grade, DHS Director Twyla Arnette; Lakeita Gulley, 11th grade, Chad Cornelius, Nevada County Ambulance; Cyneqa Haynie, 9th grade, Juvenile Judge Duncan Culpepper; and Crystal Moss, 11th grade, and Tiffany Walker, 10th grade, Elaine Williams, Nevada County Recycling Center. The goal of these activities was to help students understand and appreciate how city and county governments are established and operate. The experience they enjoyed as proxy elected officials will be remembered for a long time. This also was the a civics class in action. They now have a better knowledge and appreciation for city and county governments. The Youth Day in Prescott and Nevada County ended around 3 p.m. as they returned to the PHS campus.
