On Monday, August 14, the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, in cooperation with the Nevada County Conservation District, assisted a Prescott neighborhood located on East Main Street in establishing a fire ant abatement program.

A short program was conducted before the bait was applied. To kick-off the program we discussed plans and goals for the abatement program. Dr. Kelly Loftin, UA fire ant specialist, then talked about the different baits and contact insecticides available to control fire ants and the application rates. Red Smith from the Nevada County Conservation District explained how the abatement program has worked in other areas of the state and the success of those programs.

Signs, designating the fire ant abatement area, will soon be placed at locations within the treated city block. Contact the Nevada County Extension office at 887-2818 if you have any questions concerning this program or have a neighborhood interested in becoming a fire ant abatement participant.
