Military News - Jerome Smith

Published Wednesday, August 30, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jerome H. Smith, son of Jante J.Smith of Rosston, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas and the Arabian Gulf while assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Barry, home ported in Norfolk, Va.

As part of the Middle East Force Smith's ship is participating in maritime interdiction operations to enforce U.N. sanctions restricting trade with Iraq. While inspecting vessels suspected of violating the sanctions, USS Barry is playing a major role in maintaining U.N. policies.

USS Barry is one of the most powerful warships ever put to sea. The computer-based AEGIS weapons system is the heart of the ship's war-fighting capability. It centers around a powerful radar that enables the crew to detect, track and fire on more than 100 targets at a time.

Smith, a 1984 graduate of Oak Grove High School, joined the navy in March 1987.
