Record Temperature Reached

A new high temperature record for August has been reached.

According to John Teeter, Prescott meteorologist, the mercury climbed to a blistering 106 on Aug. 19, breaking the old record of 103, set in 1954.

Teeter said the lowest the temperature has been was 66 degrees on Aug. 13-14.

When Aug. 21 arrived, he said, it was the 29th straight day without rain in the area. This is unusual, but isn't a record.

In 1930, 1954 and 1980, he said, there were longer periods without rain.

While 106 is terribly hot, it isn't a record high temperature. This dubious record is 112, set on July 16, 1930, at the beginning of the "Dust Bowl" era in American history.

"Our two dogs are consuming twice the usual amount of water," Teeter said. "Be sure your animals have plenty of water."
