Gurdon's Haley Griffin Part Of Championship TeamPublished Wednesday, August 30, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe Arkansas Mavericks 12 and under girls' basketball team recently won the BCI national championship in Fort Worth, Texas. They swept the national tournament with a 7-0 winning record. Haley Griffin of Gurdon was on the team. Her parents are Gary and Marsha Griffin. "This team had a great year with a total record of 34-7 with 4 of those losses against 13 and under teams," Steve Simmons, coach of the team, said. The Mavericks also won their third consecutive AAU state championship and their second consecutive BCI state championship. "This is a special group of girls who have worked very hard to get where they are as basketball players, but they are also very good kids off the court and their families and communities should be very proud of them," Simmons said. The Mavericks basketball team consist of 12 players from all over Arkansas, formed to compete in state and national tournaments. They are sponsored by Maverick Transportation Inc. Little Rock.
