Classy Moments from CMS

Published Wednesday, August 30, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

The Cabe Middle School students are back. They really do seem to be glad to be back. Remarks like, "I am so glad to be back in school," and "I have been so bored, I am glad school has started back," are being heard from several of our students.

Oh, we have heard of wonderful vacations, cousins who spent the summer, other relatives who were able to visit each other, and the big trip to Magic Springs that was enjoyed by several students. Those who have been to Magic Springs said it was just so much fun.

Schedules are set now the first semester. Mr. Alexander has worked really hard trying to meet the students' requests of schedule change. He was able to make some happy, and some just had to take certain classes at certain times due to conflicting class times. Now that it is all completed, we can get those roll books filled in with the correct names and know where each student will be for a semester.

As usual at the beginning of school there are so many different things for the students to remember to get done. Handbook forms, consent forms for drug testing, money for assignment planners, Junior Scholastic, science and math magazines and most importantly the emergency cards returned. They are required to have a zipper binder and the assignment planner from CMS in the binder at all times. Students are to enter the assignment for each class in the planner as they will be checked to make certain they are keeping a record of all assignments.

CMS has about 290 students at present. Some are students who have just moved to the Gurdon School District, of which we are very glad to extend a big welcome. The new students are quickly learning their way around campus.

We have some changes at CMS of which faculty and students are adjusting as quickly as possible. Mrs. Clark, former seventh and eighth grade English teacher, was transferred to the fifth grade reading and spelling class. That move is for one year, due to Mrs. Debbie Davies taking a medical leave. Mrs. Davies, we are thinking of you and will miss you, but just remember that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Polly Ferguson is on a year's contract for seventh and eighth grade English. She has had a lot of help getting her room ready, as her daughters, Bonnie and Kathryn, helped mom get things in order. We welcome Mrs. Ferguson.

Mrs. Mary Leamons is the media specialist at CMS. Mrs. Leamons, formerly Mary Self, is a graduate of GHS and just seems as though she is just coming back home. Welcome to CMS.

Ms. Sandra Hatley, former junior high girls basketball coach accepted a position in Warren. Mrs. Cindy Escalante is taking that job until the position can be filled. Now, some of the students said their teacher could not tell time, but we know better. It can be confusing when you have two bell schedules, one for short schedule and one for regular schedule, and that is what happened to Mrs. Escalante. Now that she is fully aware and totally alert the students are on time. She knows how to do that outside duty, as she has earned the respect of the students. Good job.

Mrs. Carolyn McClure has transferred to the special education position, replacing Mrs. Michaelyn Morehead. Mrs. Morehead transferred to sixth grade reading and spelling, which was Mrs. Julia Smithson's class until she retired last school year.

We also have a new name in the fifth grade, but not a new teacher. Mrs. Keri Green recently became Mrs. McCuistion. We congratulate her and her new family.

We returned to a Spic and Span building. Our janitors did an outstanding job during the summer cleaning, polishing, waxing, shampooing carpets and many other chores. We thank each one of you who worked so hard to keep our building looking new. A big thank you to Virginia Giles who worked during the week of Aug. 14 while the teachers were getting their rooms ready for the students. Ms. Giles was always there to make sure that things were clean and tidy for us.

Mrs. Cynthia Anderson, an aide, missed the first week with students due to a minor surgery. She probably is on the job when you read this article. Mrs. Debbie McBride has been filling in for Mrs. Anderson and I do believe that she is ready to give that job back to her.

Last, but certainly not least, we are grateful to have the faculty back that we have worked with before. It is always good to have the family back together.

A good year is ahead of us. We are ready and looking forward to nothing but being successful as we make those Classy Moments at CMS.
