Trash Being Dumped On Gurdon StreetsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 30, 2000 in the Gurdon Times Trashy problems have stuck their ugly head back up in Gurdon. According to Mayor Rick Smith, there are people who are leaving items in the right-of-way and, in some cases, in the street the garbage company the city contracts with won't pick up. Smith said this includes old televisions, furniture and limbs. Twice each year a clean-up week is held in Gurdon. During these weeks the city's street department employees pick up everything except household garbage. Smith said the next clean up week will be in either late September or early October, whenever the hot weather breaks and such work can be done without endangering city employees. For household garbage, he said, it must be bagged and not weigh more than 40 pounds, or the company won't pick it up. Those who have items piled in the right-of-way or in the street should understand they can be given a citation for littering. This carries a fine of $1,000. This, he said, creates a problem for city workers and makes Gurdon look bad. "We don't have the facilities or manpower to do pick-ups at any time." In addition, Smith said, people should be careful when storing combustibles because of the dry weather conditions. Those who continue putting their household garbage in homemade bins by the street should start making changes. Smith said the city's garbage company will no longer pick up this garbage. Along with this, he said, those who have such containers by the street will be asked to move them, or face possible fines. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
