Nevada School Board Hears Reports On Workshop

Character workshops went well for personnel of the Nevada School District.

Nevada Superintendent Rick McAfee, at the regular meeting of the Nevada School Board Tuesday, Aug. 15, said these workshops help the instructors teach students in k-12 how to get along and participate with one another in a global world. "It's an excellent program."

He informed the board Transportation Director Jim Cross and the district's drivers were attending an in-service meeting and Cross couldn't be at the board meeting.

Cross, McAfee said, is certified to do driver training and does this for drivers in the Nevada as well as other districts.

Natalie Sherwood, Nevada Elementary principal, said teacher attendance at a technical workshop was well attended as there were two or three teachers per computer available. Those attending learned Word Perfect and Powerpoint programs.

The board gave McAfee permission to advertise for a teaching position for special education.

There is a student in the district who is unable to attend regular classes and the special education instructor will provide home-bound instruction for the child.

In other personnel business, the board approved the transfer of a lunchroom worker to the maintenance crew and moved Diane Drake to full-time status for the position in the lunchroom.

McAfee said a special meeting will have to be called before the regular session scheduled on Sept. 21.

This, he told the panel, is because state law requires the district to have a working budget approved no later than Sept. 15.

Earlier in the summer the board approved the two-year budget, also required by the state, but having no meaning for the coming school year.

The problem, McAfee said, is the district has to wait until the financial figures come in from the state before it can properly prepare a budget for the 2000-2001 academic year.
