More Expenses Experienced On Project At Emmet SchoolBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 16, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Getting the home economics building ready for the 2000-2001 school year has been more expensive than expected at Emmet. According to Dr. Gene Ross, Superintendent of the Emmet School District, getting the inside of the home ec room painted will be more expensive than having the exterior done, and it hasn't been done yet. Ross said the district paid $1,500 to have the outside of the facility painted during the summer. However, the low bid for painting the interior was $3,100. He told the Emmet School Board, at its regular monthly meeting Monday, Aug. 7, it could be a couple of weeks after school begins before the home ec building is ready. The panel gave Dr. Ross approval to spend up to $3,100 to get this done. It also approved his purchasing equipment for the home ec building at the best price he can find. The district received a grant for $34,000 to buy the necessary equipment to offer home economics, or family and consumer sciences, as it's now called. The board approved a new athletic policy for the coming year, written by Coach Charles Jones. Under the policy, male athletes will have a hair code, with the hair not being longer than collar length. In addition, they will not be allowed to wear jewelry on the court during practice or a game. As Jones pointed out, the Arkansas Activities Association rules don't allow jewelry to be worn during games, so it doesn't need to be worn during practices either. Nor can the male members of the Eagles wear earrings, nose rings or eye rings to away games. All athletes for Emmet will be required to conform to a dress code established by the coaches. They will not be allowed to wear sagging pants, or any article of clothing that might be considered gang related. And, students shall dress out for practice unless sick. For gym class, students must have a pair of shoes not worn outside to be used for physical education. However, old shoes worn outside may be used if they have been washed. Unless the coaches are given a note stating otherwise, athletes will be required to ride buses to and from away games. Profanity and vulgar talk will not be tolerated at any time, either during practice or a game. The use of tobacco will result in a one-game suspension for the athlete in question. Those caught using alcohol or drugs will be suspended from the team for four weeks on the first offense and a semester for the second one. Three offenses means no participation in athletics for a year. The board approved using two substitute teachers when necessary. The district will also be buying more lockers. Ross said there aren't enough of the big lockers without students having to share, and this isn't a good idea. The board gave Ross approval to buy the lockers at the best price he could find. He gave the board three important dates for the start of the new year. Thursday, Aug. 17, he said, is when the district will hold its annual Open House, with school starting Monday, Aug. 21. The third date required moving the regular meeting time to Sept. 11, when the condition of the school will be given in a public meeting. This, Ross said, is required by state and must be done annually. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
