Youth Win Prizes For Photographs

Published Wednesday, August 9, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

A black and white photo of two children grimacing as they give a sheep a bath was worth $300 to Carter Calico, 13, of Faulkner County in the recent Ross Foundation 4-H photography contest.

Carter won $200 for first place in the black and white living category and $100 for having the best overall picture, according to Lamar James, communications specialist for the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

James said 363 youths in 54 counties participated.

Rick McFarland, an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette photographer who judged the contest, was impressed by all the photographers.

"They're young, but they have an eye for composition and balance," he said. "And a lot of them have good technical skills and a good sense of timing."

What did McFarland like about the overall winning shot?

"Even though it's set up, you can't set up the kids' expressions. The emotions are real and expressions are honest. You can tell the wool and shampoo are yucky. It's the moment and the timing."

There were two winners from Clark County. Robyn LeMay won first place and $200 in the color, living' division and Trey Burchfield won third place and $50 in the black and white, living' catagory.

The winning photos were framed and placed on display at the state 4-H O-Rama in Fayetteville. They will be displayed later at the C.A. Vines Arkansas 4-H Center.
