Bluff City NewsBY JERRY McKELVYPublished Wednesday, August 2, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune The dog days of August are upon us. It's a good time for iced tea, ice cream, and watermelons, but maybe not at the same time. Lloyd and Pearl Hinson were visiting the McBrides last weekend. This will be their last visit before they return to Africa in about two weeks to continue their missionary work. Many of the grandkids are getting in last minute visits with the grandparents before school starts. Casey, Tyler and Brady Carman were visiting their grandparents, Bill and Linda Carman last Sunday just before leaving Bluff City for their new home in Sheridan. Seth and Judd Lusk from Texas were visiting their grandparents, Bill and Kay Sellers, but not at the same time. Doris Barlow had many of her family home for a visit last weekend. Did you hear about Little Willie's poem? The teacher was teaching her class how to write a poem that rhymed. Little Willie's poem was this: I saw a pretty maiden, with blue eyes and red lips. She slipped into a puddle, that reached to her ankles." The teacher wanted to know why the last line didn't rhyme. Little Willie's answer was, "Because the puddle wasn't deep enough for it to rhyme." At last report Earl Johnson was improving and should soon be able to leave the hospital in Little Rock. Obie Odell is in the rehab hospital in Texarkana. I found this item from November 1929 about the Bluff City school. The school grounds look different since everyone blistered their hands pulling up cotton stalks. Maybe some of you senior-senior citizens who were attending school here in 1929 can tell us the rest of the story. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
