Red Springs EHCPublished Wednesday, July 26, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club met July 13 in the Gurdon Municipal Building. President Tootsie Dempsey presided over the business session and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mary McBride led patriotic songs, America the Beautiful and Battle Hymm of the Republic, with Joyce Lantz at the piano. An inspirational reading, You Took My Place, was given by Betty Cook. Mattie Talley read the poem, The Lord Loves Me. Eighteen members answered roll call with "The last time I smiled when I felt like frowning." Visitors were Ron Addington, a candidate for State Representative, and Rev. Paul Sheets, with the club welcoming Paul as a new member. A card of appreciation was read from Eva S. Dodgen and daughters, Theresa Whittey and Yvonne Gado for the club's memorial donation to the Decipher Cemetery fund in memory of Edward Dodgen. Plans are being finalized by county tour chairman Clara Joiner for an educational tour to visit KATV in Little Rock with lunch at the River Market. August 11 is the tentative date set. Robert L. Burchfield III, son of Kathryn Burchfield, was awarded the $200 Extension Homemakers Council Scholarship for 2000. Robert (Trey) has been a 4-H member for nine years and currently is serving as state 4-H reporter. He plans to attend the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville this fall. Elizabeth Wilson's son, Andrew Wilson, graduated with high honors from Gurdon High School and also plans to attend the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville this fall. We are very proud of these fine young men and their accomplishments. The August meeting will be recreational,' instead of having a formal program presentation. The club voted to meet August 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Bowen's in Caddo Valley to dine, fellowship and maybe dine or eat some more. No more diets kept on this day. Mattie Talley and Helen Toland served as hostesses. Sybil Harris won the door prize. Lunch was served with Betty Cook blessing the food.
