Published Wednesday, May 26, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Rose Garden Club met in the home of Barbara Stewart at 9:30 a.m. on May 18 for a brunch. Ann Pounds and Leona Ballard were co-hostesses.

Following the delicious brunch, president Betty Turner presided over a short business session. She stated that the two Bradford pear trees recently purchased by the club have been planted in the downtown area.

Ann Foster, chairman of the nominative committee, presented the following slate of officers for 1999-2000. President, Betty Turner; first vice president, Pauline Hays; second vice president, Barbara Stewart; recording secretary, Flo Brackman; corresponding secretary, Betty Avery; treasurer, Ida Haynie, Historian, Evelyn Daniel; and parliamentarian, Allene Spencer.

The officers were elected by acclamation. Jeanne Wilson, owner of Old Columbus Herb Farm at Columbus, presented the program on 'Herbs.'

She stated that herbs originated in the Mediterranean area. She had over 50 varieties of herbs for the group to see and touch. She gave many tips on growing the plants, such as what type soil to use. They need to be in well-drained soil, have lots of sun and space, and be mulched. They don't require much water.

She gave a list of herbs and their uses, stating that fennel is wonderful to attract butterflies.

Her program was most enjoyable and informative.

Lovely spring arrangements were brought by Evelyn Daniel and Max Houston.

Billy McCain was a guest of the club.
