We are thankful for the cooler weather, but know it will not last long.

Last week was a difficult time for this community. We lost one of our

fine young men as a result of an automobile accident. Justin Phillips, the son of Jeff and Debbie Phillips, was only 17 and was a senior in high school. We can't explain why these things happen, but we know we'll understand it better by and by. Remember Jeff and Debbie in your prayers as they face the difficult days ahead.

Some TV antennas in this area were slightly rearranged by the high winds lately. We may be able to receive some new channels now.

Bill Walker has to get out early these days to load those heavy watermelons before it gets hot. He has produced some whoppers this year some that weigh around 100 pounds.

We have had some good farmers at this place over the years. In 1910

Robert Murphy Henry grew a turnip that weighed 10= pounds. In 1916 he was the largest peach grower in Nevada County.

In 1927 John D. Starnes won first place at the county fair for three of

his Duroc Jersey hogs. The first one was 18 months old and weighed 750 pounds, the second was one year old and weighed 450 pounds, and the third was 15 weeks old and weighed

200 pounds.

It was about this time of year 15 years ago that they were filming The North and the South at Reader, using the old steam train. This brought folks like Johnny Cash to

Reader. Too bad the Reader Railroad has ceased operation. I still

remember hearing the sound of the whistle as the train made its run through Caney Creek bottoms on the way to Dill's Mill and Waterloo and back to the main line at Reader. Now, even the main line is being dismantled.
