Prescott is losing its head football coach.

David Bennett has accepted the position of head football coach and athletic director of the Dierks Outlaws.

Bennett took the Curley Wolves to the semi-finals of the class AAA football tournament in 1999 with a 7-3 record in the regular season.

The Wolves posted wins over Mineral Springs, Bismarck, Nashville, Fountain Lake, Mena, Fouke and a heart stopper at Fordyce to win the conference title outright.

Bennett will replace Brad Reese at Dierks, who resigned earlier in July to take a defensive coordinator's job at Heber Springs.

While Bennett will be returning home, he graduated from DHS in 1982, the Wolves will be scrambling for a replacement.

During his time at Prescott, Bennett's overall record was 20-16. Bennett took over coaching duties with the Wolves when former Coach Eddie Jackson went to Hampton.

Whoever the school board hires will have their work cut out for them as summer practice begins in about a month.

Prescott's season opens for real Friday, Sept. 1, with a trip to Mineral Springs.

From there, the Wolves host Hope and Gurdon on successive weeks.

They hit the road Sept. 22 to tangle with Bismarck, and will travel to Nashville Sept. 29.

Fortunately, the Leopards of De Queen have to come to Prescott this season, and will make the journey Oct. 6.

After De Queen, the Wolves are on the road to Fountain Lake on Oct. 13, and on Oct. 20, have their longest trip of the season as they head to Mena.

Fouke will be the homecoming game this year, on Oct. 27, with the regular season coming to an end with the new team in the league, Ashdown, coming to Prescott Nov. 3.

Ashdown replaces Fordyce as a league opponent as the Arkansas Activities Association redrew the boundaries, moving the Redbugs into the 8AAA.

Ashdown, though, dropped in class from AAAA to AAA. The Panthers had been playing in the same division as Hope, Camden, Malvern and Arkadelphia.

The Panthers will also be replacing Fordyce as a basketball opponent.
