Gurdon 9- and 10-Year-Olds Falter In TournamentBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 12, 2000 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's 9-10-year-old All Stars put up a good fight, but couldn't make it to the finals. Gurdon opened play in the tournament, held in Bearden, by jumping all over Hampton 17-6 in the first round. Also in round one, Prescott clipped Fordyce, 9-8, Sparkman took a forfeit win over Canan and Bearden humbled Smackover, 18-4. Round two wasn't pleasant for Gurdon as the team tangled with the eventual tourney champs, Prescott. Gurdon's boys fell 15-4 in the contest. Bearden then pounded Sparkman 20-3 in the other second round game. Prescott went on to spank Bearden 16-4 in the semi-final contest. In the consolation bracket, Fordyce jumped all over Hampton 14-2, sending them home for good. Smackover followed with a forfeit win against Canan. The second round of the consolation bracket saw Fordyce humble Sparkman 14-4, while Gurdon demolished Smackover 19-7. Gurdon had its chance when the team took Fordyce on and held a three run lead late in the game. However, Fordyce rallied to post an 8-7 win to advance in the tourney. Bearden was Fordyce's next victim, with a 20-11 score. This set up a rematch of the first round game between Prescott and Fordyce, only this time Prescott won handily, 14-4 to take the title.
