Bluff City NewsBY JERRY McKELVYPublished Wednesday, June 21, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune This area received a young flood the other day, but we are not complaining. We remember the dry weather last year and how we wished for rain. Some folks are enjoying the fruits of their labors now and are harvesting new potatoes, string beans, squash, tomatoes and getting ready for the corn and purple hull peas. Don't you wish you had planted a garden? We may have a future tourist attraction in our area before long. The Bluff City Botanical Gardens is beginning to take shape over on the west side of town. Actually it's a certain person's flower garden. I won't mention the name or they might be overrun with sightseers. We were sorry to hear of the death of John Cannon last week. He was well known in this area and had preached at Bluff City several times. Guartha Gulley of Bluff City passed away June 10. Funeral was June 17 with burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery near White Oak Lake. I understand White Oak Lake State Park renovations have been completed and they are open for business. They have plans for some more expansion in the coming years. Summer is now officially here, so get ready for the hot days ahead. Someone asked me the other day when Bluff City got electricity. Let me know if you remember the year. I'm guessing about 1946. I found that in 1930 the Bluff City PTA met with a man who wanted to sell them a light plant for the school. They were trying to decide whether to buy a Fairbanks-Morse plant or a Delco plant. I also a found a list of little known facts. According to this list, the average American eats two pounds of bugs each year that are accidentally ground up while making such things as spaghetti sauce, peanut butter and other foods. They said not to worry about it. They are a good source of protein. A gospel reunion concert will be at St. John Baptist Church July 2 at 7 p.m. Special guests includes Spiritual Five Juniors, Evening Stars Gospel Singers and former members of the Bright Stars. Everyone is invited to be a part of the concert. For more information call Finis Purifoy at 870-685-2914. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
