Mary Barber Purtle, 83, of Prescott, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at St. Michael's Health System in Texarkana, Texas.

Mrs. Purtle was born November 6, 1916, in Bradley County to Jesse M. and Tommie E. Bond Barber. She was a retired licensed practical nurse and insurance sales person. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Prescott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Purtle, who died in November 1995.

Survivors include one son, Homer Purtle Jr. of Minden, La.; two daughters, Virginia Purtle of Newport News, Va., and Jane P. Helm of Boone, N.C.; one brother, Harold Barber of Morrow, Ga.; two sisters, Willie Basham of Minden, La., and Bobbie Anderson of Vicksburg, Miss.; six grandchildren; Bradley Barham, Buell Steelman, Wendy Purtle, John Barham, Heather Purtle and Mary C. Steelman; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 11, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott with Rev. Tom Mitchell and Rev. Chad Brandon officiating. Burial was in DeAnn Cemetery under the direction of Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home.
