The high gas prices didn't seem to have much effect on holiday travel. People still had their fun as usual on Memorial Day weekend.

After a very hot and humid week, we were treated to a nice rain, which

was appreciated by most folks.

Oleta Nelson has spent a few days in St. Michael's Hospital in Texarkana having some tests done. We hope she is soon feeling better and will be home soon.

Margie Knight has been sick the last few days, but was improving at last report. Her daughter and granddaughter have returned home. They were here for the funeral of Hugh Hackney, Margie's brother, a few days ago.

Other funerals reported within the last two weeks were those of Nellie Smallwood, with burial at St. John Cemetery, and Christopher Gulley, with burial at Union Grove Cemetery.

Elloene McBride is also on the light duty list due to a leg problem. She was able to be in church on Sunday, but was moving slowly.

It is only about a month until we should be seeing some local watermelons for sale. Until then we will have to make do with those "foreign" melons.

My wife got a pleasant surprise last week. A few months ago, she discovered that she is a third cousin to Richard Chamberlain, the actor. She wrote him a letter, hoping he would reply. Well, last week when she opened the mailbox, there was a letter from him. He sent a nice autographed picture, which she has already hidden away with her most treasured possessions.

That just goes to show if you shake your family tree, there's no telling who might fall out.

It may be hard to believe, but Bluff City was once a thriving little

town with several stores, a drug store, a doctor's office, a barber shop, a blacksmith shop, a school, and several churches. There were even named streets back in 1892. I have found that J.D. Nichols was building a new store on Adams Street in 1892. Here are some old ads from Bluff City in the year 1915.

If your hair is short, let me make it shorter. A good hair cut and shave for 15 and 20 cents. C.C. Henry

Right this way to get refreshments of all kinds. Drinks and ice cream on Saturday and Sunday. 5 and 10 cents. Whaley Drug Store

If you need sporty shoes, boys, I have them waiting for you at reasonable prices. J.L. Henry and Bros.

Just received a car of hay. If your stock is hungry, please come around

to see us. Upton and Harvey

In 1928, I found this ad: If you are tired take a seat, but if you're hungry get you something at J. N. Byrd's to eat.
