Nevada High School Part Of ProgramPublished Wednesday, June 7, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayuneExcelling in academic skills and in the challenges of their chosen career and technical education career majors has earned 266 Arkansas high school students a 2000 High Schools That Work Award of Educational Achievement.' Created by the Southern Regional Education Board in Atlanta, Ga., High Schools That Work places state and local education and community leaders in a collaborative partnership to improve student learning. The program not only ensures that high school students succeed in their career and technical education career majors, but also ensures that students have mastered the academic skills needed to either continue their education or enter the job market once they graduate from high school. The career and technical education majors are offered by the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education in five occupational areas: Agriculture Education, Business and Marketing Technology, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Medical Professions Education and Trade and Industrial Education. In Arkansas 23 high schools are currently certified as High Schools That Work sites, including Nevada High School in Rosston. Each school district must commit to the program for a minimum of five years and also must support career and technical education teachers with a staff development, materials and time to implement the program. Other requirements include developing an action plan and submitting annual progress reports. Students earning the High Schools That Work Award of Educational Achievement' will have the opportunity to allow the Southern Regional Education Board to forward their names to employers across the country who need employees with the skills represented by the award. The 266 Arkansas winners are part of a group of 11,300 students nationwide who earned the award this year. Jerrun Lewis at Nevada High School was one of the 266 Arkansas winners.
