Group Holds Annual Fishing DerbyPublished Wednesday, June 7, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Boys to Men and Girls to Women (BM-GW) held its third annual fishing derby Saturday, May 27. A caravan of 16 automobiles left the Bank of Prescott parking lot at 7:15 a.m. enroute to the Jeff Barr Farm near Bodcaw. A total of 51 persons were in attendance (30 mentees, 17 mentors and four other parents). It was a very beautiful and pleasant day. Thunder clouds moved slowly overhead with a brisk wind that kept the temperature around 65 degrees. The sun was shining all day. The derby started at 8:15 a.m. and ended at 12:00 noon. Most participants caught at least one fish. Some of the smallest kids caught some of the largest fish. The kids were very excited about just being on a fishing pond; some for the first time. The last 30 minutes of the derby was set aside for picnicking and the award ceremony. Several beautiful awards were given to the kids in several categories. The were given as follows: most fish by numbers went to Robin Wiley with nine fish; most fish by weight went to Robin Wiley with a total of 9.3 kg.; longest fish, 19 inches, went to Amanda Smallwood and Ivon Young; largest fish went to Alisha McDuffie with 1.3 kg.; and the smallest fish went to Brandy Smith with 3.5 inches. There were many other awards given away to kids who did not win one of the catagorize prizes. Every young participant had a good time and left the derby with a nice gift. During the award ceremony everyone was stuffing themselves with hot dogs, chips, cookies and an assortment of ice cold pops. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
