1999 Free Fishing Days June 11-13Published Wednesday, May 26, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesWhether you have never fished, are a novice fisherman or a seasoned angler who just hasn't had time to fish this year, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has a bonus for you June 11-13. Those are the 1999 free fishing days, one of the greatest outdoor entertainment bargains in the state. For that weekend Arkansans and visitors will be able to try out a new sport or get started on the fishing season without having to buy a license. This traditional weekend coincides with National Fishing Week sponsored by the American Sportfishing Association and state conservation agencies across the country. The events are geared toward youth, but anyone can participate simply by going fishing or by participating in one of more than 2,000 fishing clinics, tournaments and other special events scheduled nationwide. National Basketball Association star Karl Malone, honorary chairman for National Fishing Week, reminisces about fishing with his seven brothers and sisters growing up in northern Louisiana. "We couldn't afford to go to a movie or anything like that, so we'd pool our money and buy bait and tackle," Malone said. "It was a lot of fun, and we'd go practically every day to ponds near home. Mom would go with us, too, when she didn't have to work." Arkansas has one of the most diverse systems of reservoirs and waterways in the country. Black bass, many species of bream, crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, striped bass, walleye, white bass, hybrid bass, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout can be found in various areas of the state. For those who have been wondering about these resources in Arkansas, free fishing days is the perfect opportunity to explore them. It's also a great time just to get the kids out and enjoy family time. For information on free fishing days or in your area, contact the Game and Fish Commission office nearest you or the Little Rock AGFC headquarters.
