Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, June 7, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

As you read this article, you probably are aware that school is out. This year has just seemed to have flown by, although some of you may not think so. But when students are heard saying, "It just seems impossible for this year to be over," then we know that we are not alone in realizing how fast time goes by when you are having fun.

The eighth grade graduation was a big success. The students seemed to suddenly appear to be older and more mature. They looked so nice in their caps and gowns. The seventh grade ushers, Blair Griffin, Jordan Purifoy, Malanie Shults, Amy Stiffler and Taylor Morehead, just added to the ceremony as each escorted a group of eighth graders to their seats.

Vanesse Crudup led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Jill Plyler voiced the invocation. The remaining honor students, Michael Testa, Lindett Kadiri, Takia Williams, Robyn Lemay, Heather Drake, Kim Hulan, LaKendra Hawthrone and Nikita Broscoe, delivered speeches of appreciation to parents, teachers and friends. Also, speeches of encouragement were given to classmates.

Kim McKenzie had the high school gym beautifully decorated. Mrs. Hitt sang I Will Remember You to the future freshman class.

The eighth graders were taken to the park for a big day playing volley ball, basketball and especially enjoying the hamburgers. Mrs. Clark and Mr. Bearden deserve a big thank you for taking care of the students.

Several went on field trips that had been delayed before due to the weather.

The CMS Student Council had the installation of officers for the school year 2000-2001. President will be Christa Hopson, who is ready to assume her new duties. A beautiful table with a glass top, where pictures can be displayed, was presented to Mrs. Clingan by the outgoing officer.

The awards assembly was enjoyed by several guests. We always appreciate parents, grandparents and friends taking time to come and be part of the various activities at our school.

Mrs. Franklin presented the Presidential Academic Awards to Robyn Lemay, Nikita Broscoe, Lindett Kadiri, Jill Plyler, Amy Stiffler, Malanie Shults, Carolanne Duke, LaDonna Lasker, Sean O'Connell and Porcha Anderson. Robyn Lemay and Jill Plyler have maintained a 3.5 to a 4.0 GPA since fifth grade.

Students of the year are fifth graders Dadrian Glenn and Jessie Hogue; sixth graders Marco Giles and Jennifer Watson; seventh graders Taylor Morehead and Malanie Shults; and eighth graders Jonathan Gonzales and Lynsey McKenzie.

Teachers presented various awards from their individual classes. It has been a good year. We are proud that our test scores went up. We are saddened after hearing of Mrs. Smithson's retirement. We are going to miss her.

This is the last article for this school year and I would to thank each of you that have taken the time to let us know how much you enjoy the reading about us at Cabe Middle School. We think we are very special as we make those Classy Moments at CMS.
