Gurdon Sports Banquet HeldBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, June 7, 2000 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon High School's annual Athletic Banquet was once again filled with pageantry and accolades. The student-athletes were recognized and honored for the efforts they gave for the Go-Devils and Lady Devils. Devil Football Coach John Pace got things underway by naming the All District football players from Gurdon. These were Brannon Hatley, Lee Marks, Cody Cox, Colby Pace and Brandon Ellis. Hatley, Pace told those gathered in the GHS cafetorium, was also named All State. From there Pace presented awards for individual efforts on the gridiron. Hatley took home three of these honors, including outstanding offensive back, the Go-Devil Award and Ed Sherman Award. Chris Thompson was named outstanding defensive back for the Devils in 1999, while Mark and Cox split the honors as outstanding defensive linemen for Gurdon. Ellis was tabbed the outstanding offensive lineman on the team. Most improved, an honor all players covet, was shared by Joe Plyler and Jeremy Means. These two showed consistent improvement with each outing throughout the season. Baseball awards were also presented by Pace. All District honors went to Brandon Gattis, who recently accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Ouachita Baptist University, Colby Pace, Tommy White, Lewis Crain and Daniel McElhannon. White and Gattis were named as the outstanding defensive players for the Diamond Devils, while Colby Pace got the honor as outstanding offensive player of the team. Jake Plyler was named most improved, with Gattis taking home the prestigious Go-Devil Award. In track, Dennis Brown, Chris Thompson, Oliver Webster and Cameron Dickerson made the All District team.
