Emu Escapes; Captured Near Railroad TracksPublished Wednesday, June 7, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesEMU ROUNDUP It was quiet in Gurdon, Thursday, May 25, until a runaway emu was spotted near the Gurdon City Hall. Gurdon Police officer Frank Plasek was called in to capture the bird. Plasek began herding the emu and received assistance from Gurdon animal control officer Carroll Martin. The two began moving the bird toward City Hall when a neighborhood woman provided Plasek with a rope. It took two tries before he lassoed the emu and took it to safety. The emu belonged to Jimmy Hughes, who originally caught it in the woods and took it home. Plasek said it took about 25 minutes to corral the bird.
