Commencement ceremonies for Garland County Community College students were held on May 15 in the Hot Springs Convention Center.

Candidates for graduation and their degrees included Mary Michelle McDonald of Gurdon with an associate of science in nursing degree.

Five Ouachita Baptist University social clubs recently selected little sis', beaus and big brothers to represent them for the 1999 fall semester.

Little sis' for the Kappa Chi men's social club included Cassidy Allen, a sophomore mass communications major from Gurdon.

Social clubs at Ouachita seek to promote school spirit by sponsoring both formal and informal gatherings, parties, entertainment and campus and community action activities.

Kara Thomas, a music education major at Henderson State University, was one of only six freshmen to recently receive the Outstanding Freshmen Academic Achievement Award given by the Matt Locke Ellis College of Arts and Sciences.

Thomas received the award May 3 in a presentation ceremony and reception held in the Russell Fine Arts Center. She was nominated by the university's music department as well as her English professor for academic achievement, involvement, leadership and service.

Thomas is a 1998 graduate of Gurdon High School and the daughter of John and Martha Thomas of Gurdon.

Henderson State University recently hosted the Heart and Key Awards Ceremony.

Courtney Thomas of Gurdon received recognition for receiving the Thurman May Scholarship in honor of Lois Dodson.

The awards ceremony is presented each year by Heart and Key to publicly recognize the recipients of awards or scholarships and to show appreciation to the organizations presenting these awards.
